On November 8the opening ceremony of the 16e The Jiangxi Games were held in Jiujiang, a city honored as the “National Historical and Cultural City of Jiangxi Province”
The quadrennial competition is made up of a youth division, a social division, a school division and an institutional division. Nearly 30,000 athletes from across the province will participate in 71 major events and 2,529 minor events.
This is the first time that Jiujiang has hosted the province’s largest, highest and most influential comprehensive sporting event. The local government attaches great importance to the event, and the preparatory work has established a number of “historic firsts” for the Jiangxi Provincial Games, including the torch relay.
Since being collected from the Xiushui Memorial of the Autumn Harvest Uprising on September 17the torch was relayed in the seven red sites of Tonggu, Anyuan, Yiyang, Ruijin, Yudu, Jinggangshan and nanchang, and 12 counties of Jiujiang. Six hundred and forty representatives from various industries across the province participated in the torch relay,
During the opening ceremony, five torchbearers, including Zhao XiaomeiTan Yiquan, Shu Wei, Zhong Liang and Peng Bo, passed on the torch. Xu Shixiao, canoe women’s doubles gold medalist 500m at the Tokyo Olympics, lit the main torch.
The Games will run until November 18.
