Amber Heard: Johnny Depp trial juror said actress appeared to shed ‘crocodile tears’

A juror in the recent Johnny Depp defamation trial in the US has given his impressions of Amber Heard, saying she appeared to shed “crocodile tears” during her testimony.

Speaking to Good Morning America on Thursday on the condition of anonymity, the juror said the actress “didn’t come across as believable.”

Depp sued Heard for defamation after she wrote an article for the Washington Post in 2018, describing herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

The jury found that Heard had defamed Depp and ordered her to pay him $10 million in damages.

But Heard counter-sued after one of Depp’s lawyers gave an interview ahead of the trial in which he described her abuse claims as a “hoax.”

The jury found Heard was defamed by the comments and also awarded her $2 million in damages.

During the trial, Heard said Depp was verbally and physically abusive towards her on numerous occasions.

But the juror said she did not seem natural or credible on the stand.

“It seemed like she was able to flip the switch on her emotions,” the juror said.

“She would answer one question and she would be crying and two seconds later she would turn ice cold.

“It didn’t seem natural.”

The juror added that Johnny Depp “seemed a little more real in terms of how he responded to questions.”

The juror was one of five men and two women tasked with deciding the trial’s outcome.

He said the jury concluded “they were both abusive to each other,” but that Heard’s legal team had failed to prove Depp committed the physical acts of violence she had claimed.

“They had their husband-wife arguments,” he said.

“They were both yelling at each other.

“I don’t think that makes either of them right or wrong.

“That’s what you do when you get into an argument, I guess.

“But to rise to the level of what she was claiming, there wasn’t enough or any evidence that really supported what she was saying.”

The juror also queried how committed Heard was to helping Depp get off drugs, when she admitted to taking them herself.

“If you really wanted to help Johnny Depp get off drugs, why are you taking drugs around him?” he said.

They also discussed the types of drug Depp mostly took – alcohol and marijuana.

“If you mix alcohol and marijuana, that’s where you usually end up – passed out,” he said, referring to a photo Heard had taken of Depp passed out after a drug binge, with ice-cream melting on his lap.

“We discussed at length that a lot of the drugs she said he used, most of them were downers.

“And you usually don’t get violent on downers.

“You become a zombie, as those pictures show.”

Other issues with Heard’s testimony, according to the juror, included the “before-and-after” photos submitted into evidence which purported to show the result of one of Depp’s physical assaults.

The juror said they believed the argument that one picture was digitally manipulated to “redden” Heard’s face, so that it looked bruised.

Heard’s credibility was also punctured by the revelation that she had not donated $7 million from her divorce settlement to charity, as she had previously claimed.

“The fact is, she didn’t give much of it away at all,” the juror said.

“It was disingenuous.”

Finally, the juror denied claims that the jury was “bribed”, star-struck by Depp or unduly influenced by social media.

He said he and at least three other jurors did not have Twitter accounts.

“Social media did not impact us. We followed the evidence,” he said.

“None of us were really fans of either one of them.

“We didn’t take into account anything outside [the courtroom].

“We only looked at the evidence.

“They were very serious accusations and a lot of money involved.

“So we weren’t taking it lightly.”
