UEFA Women´s Champions League group stage confirmed by Arsenal by Michelle
I reported earlier today in my Just Arsenal article on the results of the UEFA WCL group stage draws, with Arsenal Women drawn in Group C and they will face Lyon, La Juventus and Zürich. In this article, we take a look at each of the Group C teams formed in the competition over the years and recent performance, along with some predictions on the Group C outcome.
There will be 6 games to be played in total with all of Arsenal’s home games being played at the Emirates Stadium. Here are the confirmed dates for our matches, and the first match will certainly be the most difficult!
Day 1 – October 19
Olympique Lyonnais v Arsenal (A) – 8pm UK
Day 2 – October 27
Arsenal – FC Zurich (H) – 8pm UK
Matchday 3 – November 24
Juventus v Arsenal (A) – 8pm UK
Matchday 4 – December 7
Arsenal v Juventus (H) – 8pm UK
Matchday 5 – December 15
Arsenal v Olympique Lyonnais (H) – 8pm UK
Matchday 6 – December 21
FC Zurich v Arsenal (A) – 5.45pm UK
Lyon are the defending champions of the competition and were seeded in Pot 1 (while Arsenal were seeded in Pot 2), so the natural assumption is that Lyon will be the most difficult Arsenal in the group stage, and perhaps even the overall competition. Lyon beat Barcelona 3-1 in the final last season (2021/22), but Arsenal’s last encounter with the seven-time UWCL Cup winners was in 2011 when Arsenal were beaten in the semi-finals. But that was 11 years ago and Arsenal Women are on fire this season. So Arsenal need not fear this Champions League giant, nor should they expect an easy run for their money with the group underdogs either. We are sure that all of these games will be a battle for supremacy.
Then there’s Juventus, who Arsenal last faced in a pre-season friendly in August 2018, at Meadow Park. On that occasion, Arsenal annihilated Juventus 5-0, with four goals from Vivianne Miedema and a stunning strike from Kim Little. 4 years is a long time in football.
Finally, there’s FC Zurich, whom Arsenal haven’t played in the Champions League since 2008. Arsenal won that match 7-2 with current Arsenal club captain Kim Little scoring a hat-trick.
Arsenal will publish ticketing details soon, look for updates to ensure your presence at the Emirates Stadium for the UWCL group stages.
We will definitely secure our tickets. All matches will take place on midweek evenings, which might make things a bit harder to attend. We will only have to take the afternoons on match days!
