Australian Test captain Pat Cummins defends missing white ball tour of Pakistan ahead of Indian Premier League

Test captain Pat Cummins is ‘comfortable’ with missing out on the white-ball series against Pakistan as the Indian Premier League draws nearer.

Pat Cummins is standing by the decision he and two of his Aussie teammates made to miss the limited overs series against Pakistan in order to rest up ahead of the IPL.

Cummins, David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will feature in Australia’s first Test tour of Pakistan since 1998, which kicks off next week, but were all omitted from the white-ball squad.

Instead of lining up in the three ODIs and one T20I, Cummins, Warner and Hazlewood will take a load off before joining their respective IPL franchises. Starc won’t link up with an IPL outfit but has also been rested.

On Friday, after Australia’s final training session before heading to Pakistan, Cummins defended the decision to sit the white-ball series out.

Cummins said the week off had been brought on more by the short turnaround between the Tests and the white-ball series, rather than specifically needing to rest for the IPL.

The last day of the third and final Test is only four days before the first ODI.

“It’s an opportunity to have a week’s rest after a pretty gruelling three Test match series. I think that’s probably been the main factor in the decision, as much as anything else,” he said.

“We’re playing three Test matches, 15 days of Test match cricket in 22 days that we’re over there.

“To then tag on some white ball cricket directly after that is a pretty big ask in what will be a really busy 12 months.”

Cummins said missing matches was part and parcel of being a modern-day cricketer.

“(I’m) comfortable with the decision; it’s the realities of playing cricket – three formats, 12 months of the year,” said Cummins.

There is expected to be overlap between the IPL and the Pakistan tour, but Cricket Australia won’t release Cummins, Warner and Hazlewood until the white-ball series wraps up on April 5.

“We’re not flying straight out from Pakistan to the IPL,” Cummins confirmed.

The time off comes after Cummins, Hazlewood, Warner and Starc all featured in Australia’s triumphs at the T20 World Cup and in the Ashes, although only Starc and Warner played every game of those two series.

Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins also appeared in the recent T20I series against Sri Lanka, but the quicks were permitted to leave Australia’s hub early in order to rest up before the Test tour of Pakistan.

Warner and World Cup hero Mitch Marsh missed the series to rest up before the tour of Pakistan.
