In 9Honey’s new series Best Selfie, we present stars with old images from their Instagram feed to see how they react. Expect memories of joy, heartbreak and insecurities, all retold through the lens of time.
Catriona Rowntree began her career as a researcher on Channel Nine’s Wonderworld, going on to become a reporter and in 1994 the host of the show. At the same time, she was a presenter on Triple J radio and host of the children’s program What’s Up Doc?.
In 1996 Rowntree joined the Getaway team as a reporter, and has remained with the travel series to this day. Her working day is something the rest of us can only dream of: getting paid to travel to some of the world’s most spectacular locations.
No wonder she’s been with the program for over 26 years – that’s one gig no one should ever give up.
Rowntree joined Instagram in 2012, posting photos of her first combined skiing trip with her husband.
Watch Catriona’s full reaction in the first episode of Best Selfie in the video above.
“That was taken by my husband,” she told 9Honey.
“It was the first time we’ve ever gone skiing together, even though both of us had skied for years separately. And it was like a first date.”
For much of Rowntree’s career, she’s managed to keep her personal life mostly private, including her marriage to farmer James Pettit, and the birth of her two sons, Andrew and Charles.
“[My husband] doesn’t even read the newspaper. He has no social media at all.”
As Rowntree’s confidence in posting on Instagram grew, so too did her comfort in posting more of her non-television life. In 2013 she first shared pictures of a family holiday to Sea World on the Gold Coast.

“That photo was taken at a moment of complete joy in my life,” she said.
“We had this wonderful opportunity to meet the dolphins, something I’ve done 101 times with Getaway, but in this case I wasn’t sure how people would feel if I show this.
“There’s definitely a fine line that those in the media have to walk.”
One of Rowntree’s most precious memories was a Getaway trip to Paris that she took with her mother, Heather.
“That photo with my mum is one of the most beautiful moments that we’ve ever shared,” she said.

Soon after this photo was taken, Rowntree’s father died of cancer.
His death, and reflecting on this trip with her mother, brought Rowntree to a realisation to never put anything off.
“[I realised that I had to] savour every moment. None of us know what is around the corner for us,” she said.
“Make the most of every moment and treasure everything.”
Beautiful words to live by.
