Caeleb Dressel Scratches Men’s 100 Free Semis At 2022 World Championships

2022 FINA WORLD AQUATIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Double reigning world champion Celebrity Dressel will not defend his men’s 100m freestyle title at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest.

Dressel is a late streak from the semis, appearing on the initial version of the heat sheet but missing a few minutes later once it was revised.

USA Swimming said SwimSwam Dressel’s scratch was due to medical reasons.

USA Swimming National Team General Manager Lindsay Mintenko offers the following statement:

A decision was made by Team USA in consultation with Caeleb, his coach and team medical staff that he withdraw from the 100-meter freestyle event for medical reasons. The team will determine its participation in events later in the week.

The 25-year-old has won the event at the last two world championships as well as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and is the only swimmer in history to beat 47 seconds in a textile suit.

Dressel was ranked second out of the preliminaries with a time of 47.95, behind the Romanian David Popovici (47.60).

The match was one fans had been looking forward to, especially after Popovici’s dominating victory in the 200 freestyle on Monday.

With Dressel’s scratch, South Korea Hwang Sunwoowho won the silver medal behind Popovici in the 200 freestyle, advanced to the semis after finishing tied for 17th in the preliminaries in 48.61.

Hwang tied with Australia Zac Uncertainty, although it looks like Incerti was scratched to avoid a play-off for first alternate. Incerti was dealing with an illness earlier which kept him out of the Aussie 400 freestyle relay.

Dressel is also due to contest the men’s 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly individually later in the competition, with the two heats taking place on Thursday morning.
