Lady Susan Hussey, the godmother of Prince William, resigned from her role at Buckingham Palace and apologised after a charity founder said she was questioned about whether she was really British at a royal reception on Tuesday.

The guest, Ngozi Fulani, is the CEO of Sistah_Space, an organisation that provides specialist services to women of African and Caribbean heritage affected by abuse.

Fulani – who is British-born – said she was asked by Hussey: “Where do you really come from”, “Where do your people come from” and “When did you first come here?”

A spokesman for Prince William said it was “really disappointing” to hear of Fulani’s experience.

“Racism has no place in our society. These comments were unacceptable,” the spokesman went on, adding “It’s right that the individual concerned has stepped down”.

News of the encounter came to light as the Prince and Princess of Wales travelled to the US ahead of the second iteration of the Earthshot Prize Awards later this week.

William could be seen grimacing as he arrived at Logan International Airport with Kate by his side.

On arrival in the US, William released a statement on behalf of him and Kate saying they were “delighted to be back in the United States”.

“On this, our first overseas visit since the death of my grandmother, I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston for their many tributes paid to the late Queen. She remembered her 1976 bicentennial visit with great fondness.

“My grandmother was one of life’s optimists. And so am I. That is why last year we launched The Earthshot Prize with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire hope and urgent optimism as we look to save the future of our planet.

“To the people of Boston, thank you. I’m so grateful to you for allowing us to host the second year of The Earthshot Prize in your great city. Catherine and I can’t wait to meet many of you in the days ahead.”

After arriving in Boston, Kate and William visited Boston City Hall where they met the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, former US Secretary of State, John Kerry, and the US Ambassador to Australia, Caroline Kennedy, for a special event.

At the same time, an unexpected snap of Meghan and Harry’s son, Archie, also made waves online.

While little has been seen publicly of the three-year-old since he was born, a photo of a video call involving Meghan, Archie and Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland that did the rounds on social media sparked conspiracy theories.

The family was speaking with Jotaka Eaddy, the CEO of social impact consulting firm Full Circle Strategies, according to The Sun.

Also reportedly involved in the call was American political strategist Donna Brazile and American Studies professor Duchess Harris.

Harris later shared the image from the conversation on social media, likely with the approval of the Duchess of Sussex.

The Morning Show’s entertainment editor Peter Ford explained that “People are saying (about the photo of Archie), ‘Oh yeah, isn’t that a bit suss because of the timing?

“As we were just talking about, we’ve got William and Catherine both in the States.

“Is this an attempt to kind of steal the thunder a bit?”
