Experts agree — NYC still the pizza capital of the US

New York, New York still tops the mozzarella pile.

Nine of the 50 pizza places ranked in the 2022 50 Top Pizza USA list are located in Manhattan and Brooklyn. This represents 18% of the best pizzerias in the country.

“New York City has a long and storied history of pizza making that we are very proud of, where we use excellent technique, high quality products and tradition,” said Andrew Rigie, executive director of NYC Hospitality. Alliance at the Post.

The poll salutes the mostly Italian immigrants — many from Naples, the home of pizza — who moved to America and brought with them their love of the best dough, tomatoes and mozzarella.

“This list is particularly heavy in the Neapolitan category,” explained Scott Wiener, of Scott Pizza Tours. “The style took off here before it did in any other American city.”

Rosario Procino, originally from Naples, moved to New York in 1999 and operates Ribalta on East 12th Street, which ranked third in the top 50 pizza places in America. “Pizza for Napoli is a religion. Even if we go to Rome, we don’t consider this pizza,” he explained.

Despite the Big Apple’s huge appetite for pizza, it only ranks second in the world for most pizza places. The capital of pizza is actually São Paulo in Brazil, noted Albert Sapere, one of the top 50 curators.

“Pizza is in the DNA of New Yorkers. They love it, desire it and consume it. In addition to classic slices and historic addresses, a new generation of pizza makers has emerged, using fresh ingredients,” he said.

Una Pizza Napoletana on Orchard Street was ranked first on the 50 Best Pizzas list.

Owner Anthony Mangieri – a Jersey Shore native whose family hails from Salerno, a province just south of Naples – said part of the secret to his success was a hands-on approach to making the dough.

“Nobody makes dough at the restaurant, 25 years later, except me,” he said. “Every pizza that people eat, I always make the dough myself in the morning.”
