LIV Golf LIVE: PGA Tour suspend current and future LIV players, as well as leaderboard, TV info, stream and Day 1 updates from Centurion Club

What is the future of golf with the LIV Golf Tour?

After months of speculation, the first Saudi-backed LIV Golf event kicks off today to open the breakaway series that threatens to change the sport as we know it.

Phil Mickelson, former world No 1s Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood as well as Ian Poulter are among the biggest names competing at the Centurion Club in St Albans, with six-time Major champion Mickelson set to end his break from four months of golf following his explosive comments on the PGA Tour and the breakaway led by Greg Norman.

The PGA Tour responded by threatening players with fines and legal action, but that hasn’t stopped some stars from joining the 48-man roster – no doubt helped by seemingly huge appearance fees – for an event. which features new competition rules and which tournament organizers say is an “exciting” new format.

The event at the Centurion Club will take place over three days and 54 holes, rather than the traditional four-day tournaments with 72 holes. There will be no cut, so the 48 players who will start the week will play all three rounds, while there will also be a team competition in addition to the traditional individual competition.

This is the first of seven events on the LIV Golf Tour, each with a $25 million prize pool – every player on the course receives a cup, with a guaranteed $4 million for the winner and $120,000 for last place. Of the $25 million, $5 million will be split between the top three teams.

Follow all the action and reaction to the controversial tour’s inaugural event, below:

A push from Mickelson

Mickelson leaves a short eagle putt on the 15th, but he makes sure to call the next birdie putt and rolls it well.

It’s three birdies in his last four holes and he goes one under.

Ranking of the first round of LIV Golf

Phachara Khongwatmai (-4)

Only those six players remain under par for the day but Dustin Johnson saved his innings and was back level.

Hit it!

Phachara Khongwatmai has the chance to advance three strokes with a birdie putt on the sixth hole but leaves him criminally short of the cup.

Another safely negotiated hole though.

A difficult day

There are only seven players currently under par for the day and none of them are the “big names” that LIV Golf has featured in their ads and coverage.

Brandon Grace and Charl Schwartzel are recognizable and, along with fellow South African Hennie Du Plessis, are two shots off the lead (-2).

Young people lead the way

The Majesticks GC is definitely a tale of two halves. The two youngest members are in the top five with Laurie Canter furthest of the two just three strokes off the lead.

Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter in trouble. England are respectively four and five above par.

In the sand !

Dustin Johnson is plugged into the green side bunker at 13th. He was aiming for the green on the par-five in two but now he has a terrible shot.

He only has to put it out and he succeeds but smokes it on the other side of the green and he will have a long putt for a birdie.

Mickelson was on in two and his eagle putt is short but he comes home with a three footer for a birdie! Back to parties for Phil.

PGA Tour suspends LIV Golf players effective immediately

As the first round of LIV Golf enters its final stages, here’s a reminder of what happened off the course earlier today.

The PGA Tour has contacted all PGA Tour members to advise that all participants in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series, both in Thursday’s opening competition and going forward, are suspended immediately.

The suspensions also apply to players on other PGA Tours, including the Champions, Canada, Latinoamerica and Korn Ferry Tours.

Sam Horsfield (-2) snuck within two strokes of the lead as the Majesticks GC battle for the lead in the team standings.

Laurie Canter (-1) is also clinging to it.

back to one

Phil Mickelson generates a loud cheer from the watching crowd as he throws his last birdie on the 12th to return to one over par.

Dustin Johnson had to settle for a bogey and he dropped a shot to join Phil at (+1) for the round.

Almost an albatross!

We had the first par LIV Golf, the first birdie LIV Golf, the first eagle LIV Golf and Australian Wade Ormsby is inches from the first albatross with his approach from the fairway!

His ball spins back and rolls over the right edge of the hole. It hasn’t been the best of days for Ormsby, but he’s back for the day.
