COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Basketball has chosen its 12-man roster for the opening window of the second round of World Cup playoffs, as the Americans look to get closer to a spot on the court for next year’s event. .
Jim Boylen will return as coach, assisted again by Ty Ellis and Othella Harrington.
The list will include six players – Michael Frazier II, Langston Galloway, David Stockton, DaQuan Jeffries, John Jenkins and Eric Mika – who were with the Americans during the previous qualifying window in July.
The other six players for the August 25 matches in Las Vegas against Uruguay and against Colombia on August 29 are Tyler Cavanaugh, Malik Ellison, Dewan Hernandez, Mac McClung, Robert Woodard II and McKinley Wright IV.
The Americans went 5-1 in the first qualifying round of the FIBA Americas Region, easily becoming one of 12 teams to advance to the second round.
Of these advancing nations, seven will take part in next year’s World Cup, which will take place in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. The World Cup is the main qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
There are three two-game windows in the second qualifying round – for the Americas region, these are August 25-29, November 11-14 and finally February 23-26. If the United States are ahead of Uruguay and Colombia, they could probably clinch a World Cup spot in the November window.
Canada (6-0) is the only team from the Americas region to go undefeated in the first qualifying round. Also in Canada’s second round group: Venezuela (5-1), Argentina (5-1), Dominican Republic (4-2), Panama (2-4) and Bahamas (2- 4).
The United States is in a second-round group with Brazil (5-1), Uruguay (4-2), Mexico (4-2), Puerto Rico (3-3) and Colombia (2- 4).
The top three teams in each group will qualify for the World Cup from the Americas region, along with the top team ranked fourth overall.
