Caleb Swanigan has died aged 25.
The former NBA star — who was ranked among the nation’s top prep players during his time with the Purdue Boilermakers before joining the Portland Trail Blazers — died of natural causes on Monday, according to E! New.
The Purdue Boilermakers wrote on Twitter: “Devastated. Our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Caleb Swanigan. The world lost a sweet soul last night. Love you, Biggie!” (sic)
Caleb was said to have been homeless during his early childhood before being adopted by retired football star Roosevelt Barnes during his teenage years.
Following news of his death, several NBA players took to social media to pay their respects, including former Blazers star Evan Turner, who tweeted ‘Rip caleb Swanigan’ (sic) and center Blazers Jusuf Nurki? wrote: “My thoughts and prayers to the family of Caleb Swanigan.”
After playing two seasons in Portland, he followed up with the Sacramento Kings in 2019, Caleb, and made his last professional appearance in March 2020 during a brief return to the Trail Blazers having decided to leave for “personal reasons”. .
In May 2021, the former sports star reportedly gained weight and took umbrage when a media outlet asked ‘how the hell’ did he go through such a change in such a short time, but insisted he was “happy”.
He tweeted: “When the media in your life ignores them I’m a full time father figure with trust funds for sources. When you’re right they hate you I promise. All I’m gonna say , is that I’m happy 🙂 # 999” (sic)
