New York City, San Francisco, Miami on list of 50 best pizzerias in US

New York remains the nation’s pizza capital, according to a new ranking of America’s Top 50 Pizzerias by Italian experts.

The Big Apple is home to nine of the top 50 pizza places in the country, according to 50 Top Pizza, a pizza review site in Paestum, Italy, not far from Naples.

Winning first place: Una Pizza Napoletana, located on New York’s Lower East Side. Eight other pizzerias in Brooklyn and Manhattan made it into the top 50.

Portland and San Francisco each had five pizza places on the list. No. 2 pizzeria, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco, which was named top of America’s 50 Best Pizza list last year, slipped a spot to No. 2. But owner Tony Gemignani was named the best pizza maker in the United States this year. .

50 Top Pizza claims to have more than 1,000 anonymous inspectors worldwide to help with its ranking, the first of which was published in 2018. New York City actually landed 11 spots on America’s 50 Top Pizza list last year.

After snagging second place on last year’s list for his former location in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, which he closed in September 2021, Anthony Mangieri earned the No. 1 spot for Una Pizza Napoletana, which opened in March 2022. He opened his first pizzeria, also called Una Pizza Napoletana, in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, in 1996.

“It’s humbling and I’m filled with gratitude,” he said of the No. 1 ranking in a statement to USA TODAY. “Every day since Una Pizza opened in 1996, I have had a dream to continue this work without compromise. We have been so blessed to be able to do this and continue to learn and grow as a pizzeria and pizza maker .”
