‘Nothing in consideration’ by NFL for rescheduling Bills vs. Bengals after Hamlin injury

Cincinnati, Ohio — The NFL has postponed Monday’s Buffalo Bills football game against the Cincinnati Bengals after safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest following a heavy hit in the first quarter at Paycor Stadium.

About two hours after calling off the game at 10:01 p.m., the NFL said it hadn’t even begun to consider postponing the game. Shortly after midnight Monday, there was no replay or resumption scheduled and the league was in no rush to figure out the details or the implications.

“There is nothing under consideration at this time,” Jeff Miller, the league’s executive vice president of communications, said in a conference call with media. “Our concern is for the player and his well-being. When the time is right, I’m sure we’ll have a conversation about next steps regarding the game.”

Most of the Bills organization returned to Buffalo after midnight Tuesday, but NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said some of the players asked to stay in Cincinnati to be close. of Hamlin.

The Bills landed in Buffalo at 2:50 a.m., according to WGR 550 Sports Radio’s Sal Capaccio.

Hamlin received medical treatment in the field for around 15 minutes before being strapped onto a stretcher and placed in an ambulance. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

“His heart rate was restored on the field and he was transferred to UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment,” the Bills said in a statement early Tuesday morning. “He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”

Vincent said coaches and medical staff receive an “emergency action game” every week 90 minutes before every NFL game.

“The emergency action plan has gone into effect,” Vincent said in reference to Hamlin’s injury. “Obviously we saw the coaches and the players and frankly those who were listening to the game all traumatised, including myself personally thinking about what’s going on, what’s going on in real time.”

Vincent played 14 seasons in the NFL and he said he had never seen anything like what happened to Hamlin on Monday night.

“It was really about Damar,” he said. “So immediately my player hat continued. How do you get back into the game after seeing such a traumatic event happen in front of you in real time? That’s how we thought about it. »
