O-I to build $240 million MAGMA facility in USA

OI will build a glass manufacturing plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA.

The new plant will be the first purpose-built facility for OI’s MAGMA technology.

MAGMA should further enhance OI capabilities to support multiple product categories and expand into today’s highly differentiated product segments.

The company plans to invest up to $240 million in multiple waves of expansion over time and create approximately 140 new jobs in the region.

The production plant is also expected to set new standards in sustainable glass manufacturing using renewable electricity, gas-oxyfuel and other innovative solutions.

Andres Lopez, CEO of OI Glass, said, “OI is committed to being the most innovative, sustainable and preferred provider of packaging solutions for brand building. The new plant is an important step as we continue our expansion plan in the United States and around the world, building a bright future for the company and its stakeholders. Glass is more relevant than ever and we are proud to support our customers with innovative solutions.

The MAGMA melter and its size are significantly smaller than an old glass furnace. A smaller system size and alternative materials used in its construction allow the MAGMA melter to reduce waste and construction materials needed.

The new facility will serve the Premium Spirits category. Proximity to key customers in Bourbon country will reduce logistics and further improve OI’s customer service, flexibility and sustainability.

The start of the first production line is planned for the middle of 2024, followed by up to two other production lines to serve the growing market and the continuous development of MAGMA.
