Portland police swarmed the intersection of SE 112th and Powell on Friday night after a shooting that left one dead and another injured.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Two people were fatally shot Friday night in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood of southeast Portland, according to initial statements from the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).
Police responded shortly after 7 p.m. to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Southeast 112th Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard. At the scene, the police found a man dead and another injured.
The injured victim was taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening. None of the victims have yet been publicly identified.
A police spokesperson said the suspects left the scene of the shooting, but officers found them nearby southeast of 120th and southeast of Powell. The suspects fled to the nearby neighborhood when police approached. PPB did not know how many were involved, but they were believed to be armed.
Because it seemed clear that the suspects were still nearby, PPB decided to bring in “numerous” officers and establish a perimeter before methodically searching the area.
PPB said tactical teams responded to help with the search. This included the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) – Portland’s response to SWAT – and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT).
The search was centered on Southeast 120th Avenue and Southeast Kelly Street, PPB said, with the tactical groups assisting East Compound officers and the Targeted Response Team (FIT), the group city’s gun violence working group.
Southeast 122nd Avenue was closed in both directions between southeast Clinton and southeast Bush. Southeast Powell was closed between Southeast 108th and Southeast 122nd.
“Community members within this perimeter are advised to lock doors and windows and shelter in place during the search,” PPB said. Anyone who sees anything or anyone suspicious is asked to call the police.
By the end of June, Portland police had recorded 655 confirmed shootings in the city since the start of the year. At least 197 people had been injured by bullets at that time. Both in terms of shootings and injuries, Portland’s numbers were slightly ahead of what they were this time in 2021, when there were 574 shootings and 182 injuries.
There were 42 recorded homicides in Portland at the end of June, 38 attributed to shootings. This number does not include people shot and killed by police, of which there have been several this year.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more details as they emerge.
