Last year, the company paid the City of Portsmouth $10 million for the 57-acre land just south of Interstate 264 between McClean Street and Victory Boulevard where the casino will be built. Construction began last December and is expected to be completed early next year, making it the first permanent casino to open in Virginia.
The casino is expected to inject over $200 million a year into the local Portsmouth and Hampton Road economy. Since the casino is not seeking tax incentives from the city, an independent consultant would have to pay over $16 million in annual taxes to the city of Portsmouth. These taxes include payments from casino revenue, property taxes, sales and use taxes, and hotel and entertainment taxes.
Rush Street Gaming is one of the fastest growing entertainment and casino companies in the United States. It operates casino properties in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Plains, Ill.; Schenectady and New York.
