Sonic Frontiers’ Cyber Space Levels Are Lovely Linear Stages

As part of the recent Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase this week, Sega unveiled new images of sound borders. The title, which should be released in holiday 2022 for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, stands out for its large open areas with platforms and various enemies. But the footage specifically showcases new areas of cyberspace for the first time – which was the best part of my brief stint with her at Summer Game Fest earlier this month.

While I was able to play about 45 minutes of sound borders at Summer Game Fest earlier this month, cyberspace areas were specifically embargoed until this week. Because of this, my practical impression finally described sound borders like playing as rough as it looks. But if there’s a glimmer of what sound borders could be is in Cyber Space levels. You can see what the looks like in action in the sound borders Trailer embedded below:

Basically, Cyber Space zones are more like traditional Sonic levels with linear, fast-paced racing and platforming. Earning Portal Gears by defeating bosses unlocks special Cyberspace levels at various pillars, and completing them grants Vault Keys in order to progress further towards finding the Chaos Emeralds. How it all actually works in practice after getting the Vault Keys is unclear as that’s where my time with the title really ended.

Given that I played for less than an hour and we saw maybe as much, if that, footage otherwise than sound borders, it’s hard to judge how it will all blend into the final product. While the business card of sound borders, its open-world areas, didn’t impress, dotting in more cyberspace areas would be a welcome reprieve – and there’s always the possibility that the first area of the Starfall Islands won’t make the best impression of what the game actually is. as in total. There’s a lot more we haven’t seen sound bordersand I would love nothing more than my initial reaction to be proven wrong.

“Sonic’s new journey begins when he and his friends – Amy and Tails – head to the Starfall Islands in search of Chaos Emeralds”, a description from sound borders from Sega partly reads. “As they approach the islands, sudden trouble hits their plane and they are sucked into a dimensional portal. Sonic then finds himself separated from his friends and wakes up in a strange digital world – Cyber Space. He miraculously escapes the Cyber Space and arrives at The Island of Kronos, one of the Starfall Islands, is full of ancient ruins where strange enemies roam, it’s then up to Sonic to explore the Starfall Islands, find his lost friends and discover the mysteries that surround it.

As stated above, sound borders set to release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Holiday 2022. You can check out all of our previous coverage of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog video game here.
