With so many high-end consoles on the market, gamers may find that each of their friends prefers a different platform. New England’s six states are no different, according to a new study.
A study by gaming website Spades Challenge analyzed Google search trends to determine which consoles residents of each of the 50 states were most interested in. Each of the three current-gen consoles, the Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch were able to claim at least one New England state.
Sony’s Playstation 5 won half the region, with residents of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut seeking Sony’s latest console more than any other. The Nintendo Switch was the most searched console in Maine and Vermont, while New Hampshire was the only state to prefer Microsoft’s Xbox.
The PS5 can also claim the title of the most popular console in the country, after the study revealed that 21 states were most interested in the console which sold 18.87 million units worldwide. Microsoft’s Xbox finished second with 19 states while the Switch won 10 states.
Although the Switch is the least sought after console, it’s been the console that has left store shelves the most, selling over 107 million units since its release in 2016.
“It’s clear from this data that the console wars haven’t stopped with next-gen, with the competition split state by state,” a Spades Challenge spokesperson said. “The PS5 remains king based on last year’s sales figures and these results, but it will be interesting to see if it catches up to the incredible 100 million units sold by the Nintendo Switch over the next two years. ”
