Trews to headline Fort Erie’s Canada Summer Games event

The Trews will headline the 13 for 13 cultural event on August 12 in Old Fort Erie. The event takes place at the same time as the Canada Summer Games.

Old Fort Erie will be abuzz when the Trews come to town.

The Juno-winning group is part of the 13 For 13 cultural festival taking place at Le Vieux Fort on August 12 as part of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The festival, which runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. that day, is Fort Erie’s contribution to a series of events taking place during the games. The 12 municipalities and Niagara Region collaborate with the 13 provinces/territories to showcase each couple’s unique cultural heritage, entertainment, art and dining experiences on their assigned special evening. The 13 for 13 Cultural Festival will rotate from one municipality to another for 13 days in August.

For the purposes of the festival, Fort Erie has been twinned with Nova Scotia. This one-of-a-kind initiative has never been done by any other Canada Games host. Admission to each of the 13 municipal events will be free.

In partnership with host sponsor Niagara Parks and provincial partner Tourism Nova Scotia, the Fort Erie event will feature food trucks, local vendors, a liquor zone, children’s programs, demonstrations of Scottish heavyweight sports , the creator’s game, musical entertainment culminating in the Trews concert.

“What an incredible opportunity for our community to celebrate athletic excellence, cultural heritage, arts and entertainment on the historically significant grounds of Old Fort Erie,” said Mayor Wayne Redekop. “Our nation’s history happened here.”

On July 2, the Games Torch will travel to Fort Erie from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., beginning with a cheer rally at Crystal Ridge Arena at 99 Ridge Rd. South and ending with a wrap-up party at Fort Erie Leisureplex at 3 Municipal Center Dr.

The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games will take place August 6-21 at venues across the region.
