The Ulster Senior Hurling Championship was contested every single year from 1901 to 2017 but then it was not held in 2018 for the first time in 117 years. The GAA decided to suspend the competition until 2020 to decide what they want to do so it is currently unknown if the competition will be brought back. Antrim won the title 57 times while the tournament was being held. The popularity of Gaelic football in the Ulster region is a big part of the reason that the tournament is currently suspended. The Ulster province has had great success in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and little success on the hurling side of things which is another reason that the GAA has suspended the provincial championship.
It is very interesting that the tournament was held for so many years in a row without it being canceled and now the GAA has finally decided to suspend the tournament. Many hurling fans are hoping that the GAA will decide to bring the tournament back in the Ulster region as they do not want the tradition to die out. Many fans and experts believe that the tournament will return in 2020 or 2021 and that not having the tournament for a few years could drum up more support for it.
