Woman Pushing Stroller Shot in Head on New York City’s Upper East Side, Police Say

A 20-year-old woman was shot in the head while walking in New York’s Upper East Side neighborhood on Wednesday night, police said.

The woman was pushing a stroller when she was assaulted, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams’ office. A man approached her from behind, shot her in the head, then fled the scene, authorities told CBS New York.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to multiple reports.

The baby in the stroller, identified as a 3-month-old by CBS and PIX11, was “apparently unharmed,” city council member Julie Menin said in an update shared on Twitter.

“I pray for this victim and am devastated by this relentless and senseless violence,” Menin said.

Overall crime in New York has skyrocketed in recent months, rising 27.8% in May 2022 from the same month last year, fueled largely by grand thefts, burglaries and robberies, according to data released by the New York Police Department earlier this month. .

Rising crime has increased pressure on Adams, a former police officer who successfully ran for mayor on a platform of cracking down on lawlessness. He recently appointed a gun violence czar; released a 15-page “Blueprint to End Gun Violence”; and instituted solo patrols for cops in the subway, where crime is growing at a higher rate.

At the same time, Adams attempted to blame prosecutors and judges for their alleged softness on crime.

“No one takes criminal justice seriously anymore,” he fumed at a news conference alongside law enforcement officials earlier this month. “Those bad guys don’t take them seriously anymore. They believe that our criminal justice system is the laughingstock of our entire country.

“We have to take this seriously because innocent people are dying,” he added.

However, murder and shooting rates have gradually declined. Incidents of gun violence in the city last month were down 31.4% from May 2021, according to departmental data.

Those numbers were seized by Adams’ office, which hopes to change the trajectory of a city that has recorded 1,562 shootings in 2021, the highest number in 15 years. In 2020, it recorded 1,531 incidents, more than double the figure from the previous year.

There have been 197 murders in New York this year so far. Four hundred and eight eight were recorded throughout 2021, and the city is on track to end 2022 with 11% fewer homicides, according to LX News.

“We have put every resource we have into reducing gun violence in the city,” Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said in a June 3 statement. “We’ve seen seven straight weeks of shootings go down – and that’s no coincidence.”

The unidentified suspect in Wednesday’s shooting, described as a man dressed in black and wearing a hoodie, was still at large as Mayor Adams made his way to the site at East 95th Street and Lexington Avenue.

The Upper East Side is one of New York’s wealthiest and safest neighborhoods. Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor, is less than a mile from the crime scene.

This is breaking news and will be updated.
