She’s embroiled in a major online controversy.

And on Tuesday, Yolanda Hadid was seen in New York City as she faced major criticism online over her daughter Bella Hadid’s revelation that she underwent a nose job at the age of 14, with many questioning why Yolanda permit it to happen.

Yolanda, who previously appeared on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills from 2012-2016, had her blonde locks tied back and wore blue shaded sunglasses as she put her phone in a clutch purse.

Yolanda, who was married to real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid from 1994 until 2000, and music producer David Foster from until 2011 until 2017, was seen walking with a male friend on the sunny day in the Big Apple.

Bella, now 25 – who previously denied getting any work done – recently opened up about getting the procedure during an interview with Vogue, admitting for the first time that she went under the knife as a teenager, while voicing her regret at ever undergoing plastic surgery.

‘I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors,’ she told the publication. ‘I think I would have grown into it.’

On Tuesday, many social media users bashed the runway star’s mom for allowing her teenage daughter to get cosmetic surgery at such a tender age – with some even accusing Yolanda of encouraging the then-14-year-old’s desire to alter her appearance.

‘No 14-year-old just wants plastic surgery just because, unless they’ve had a certain feature pointed out so many times to the point that they are insecure,’ wrote one user.

‘How much do you want to bet Yolanda was the main one making Bella feel that way about her nose? Then ALLOWING SURGERY?’ another said.

Age restrictions for nose jobs

The minimum age for rhinoplasty procedures, aka ‘nose jobs’ varies in different parts of the world, with the general age being in the mid-teens with parental consent considered.

Here in the UK, surgery can take place once the facial skeleton and bone is developed, generally around aged 15 in girls. While in the US where Bella lives, it can be as young as 13 or 14 in girls.

Meanwhile, in Israel, where Bella’s father Mohammed is from, clients must be at least 16 years old.

UK

Guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC) state that under 18s can only undergo Rhinoplasty procedures, aka nose jobs, if the surgery is in the patient’s ‘best interests’ for example if they are being bullied at school.

The British Face Clinic states: ‘As a general rule, once the development of the facial skeleton and the bone is complete, you can have a rhinoplasty. That usually translates to the age of 15 to 16 in girls and a year or two after that for boys.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons advises: ‘It is recommended that the patient include their parents or guardians in the consent process. Parents/guardians written consent is not legally required above the age of 16 but their verbal agreement is recommended but not essential if the patient refuses.’

US

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (AMPS) suggests Rhinoplasty can be ‘performed when the nose has completed 90% of its growth, which can occur as early as age 13 or 14 in girls and 15 or 16 in boys.’

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics: ‘Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed before the age of 18. However, teens need a parent to sign a rhinoplasty consent form to undergo a nose job if they are under the age of 18.’

ISRAEL

In Israel, where Bella’s father is from, the Hadassah University Medical Center states: ‘Candidates must be at least 16 years old, which the age the nose reaches 90% of its development capacity.’

Another added: ‘At 14, you are just too young to have a nose job… Yolanda should have never had kids!’

‘Bella Hadid got a nose job at 14???? There is a special place in Hell for Yolanda,’ said someone else.

A fourth tweet read, ‘BELLA WAS 14 when she got her first nose job. Yolanda is a menace.’

A different disgruntled fan agreed: ‘The fact Yolanda let Bella at 14 get a nose job… that’s not a good mother.’

‘Yolanda did a number on both daughters, especially Bella. Having a nose job at 14 is so problematic,’ tweeted another social media user. ‘That woman is going to Hell for what did to her daughters.’

‘Her face isn’t even grown yet and ‘you’re] letting her go under the knife?’ asked another user.

There aren’t specific laws surrounding cosmetic surgery in the States, but rhinoplasty can be performed when the nose has completed 90 percent of its growth, which can occur as early as age 13 in girls.

Yolanda, who was a famous model before she became a mom and previously starred on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, is known for being brutally honest with her daughters about what it takes to succeed in the cutthroat industry.

And this isn’t the first time that the mom-of-three has faced the furor.

Back in 2019, after Bravo released some old footage of Bella and her sister, Gigi Hadid, from when they appeared on The Real Housewives with their mom years earlier, Yolanda was ridiculed for giving out dieting advice to her young daughters, and discouraging Gigi from playing volleyball because it will make her ‘bulky.’

‘Volleyball is a very masculine sport. Modeling a very feminine thing,’ Yolanda told the then-17-year-old while preparing dinner for her family in a season three episode, which aired in 2012.

She also told the camera, ‘She’s gotta start building her career and that means sometimes we have to give up the things that we love to do.

‘These girls they train four hours a day after school so their bodies are big and bulky. I mean, they eat like men. I wanted her to develop as a woman.’

In another scene from season four of the show, Yolanda and Gigi were on set at one of her photo shoots.

The teen was getting ready to celebrate her birthday, and shared her excitement about breaking her diet.

‘I am so excited for the food,’ she told her mom. ‘Pretty much all of the food that we are eating is a like heart attack in a meal, but it’s going to be so good.’

‘You can have one night of being bad,’ Yolanda responded. ‘Then you gotta get back on your diet because, you know, in Paris and Milan they like the girls just a tad on the skinny side.’

The clips sparked a lot of scathing remarks from viewers at the time, who flooded the comment section with their concern.

‘Oh my god her mom is scary… I would run away if I was Gigi,’ one person commented, while another viewer admitted: ‘I never really cared for Gigi or Bella but after seeing this… I feel so bad for them.’

‘Wait this makes me really sad… like I’d have such horrible self-esteem if my mom treated me like that,’ someone else wrote.

Now, in the wake of Bella’s plastic surgery admission, many people are resurfacing the old clips.

‘Yolanda won’t let her girls eat but she let Bella get a nose job at 14? She is terrible,’ said one Twitter user.

‘Telling Gigi not to eat high calorie foods and now Bella getting a nose job when she was still growing? Insane.’

In the past, Bella insisted she hadn’t gotten any plastic surgery, so some fans were surprised by the confirmation that she had a nose job.

In 2020, two leading plastic surgeons weighed-in on Bella’s facial features after a former classmate shared old pics of the model, revealing just how much she had transformed since her high school days.

Dr. Sabrina Shah-Desai, a London-based surgeon who specializes in reconstructive procedures, noted that Bella has ‘changed significantly’ in the years since the yearbook portrait was taken – and she explained that this could well be the result of several different surgeries.

‘Bella looks like she has had a brow lift,’ she revealed at the time, explaining that this procedure often results in the feline ‘fox eye look’ that Bella is known for.

Dr. Shah-Desai added that the model also looked as though she underwent ‘rhinoplasty and lip fillers.’ as well as ‘facial sculpting’ – which meant she could have had ‘dermal fillers’ to enhance her cheek bones and jawline.

The medical expert also pointed out that Bella’s face appeared much thinner in 2020 than it did when she was in high school, explaining that this could be the result of Buccal (cheek) fat removal – or simply as a result of general weight loss.

But despite speculation that she’s had more work done, Bella insisted to Vogue in the new interview that the rhinoplasty was the only procedure she’s had gotten.

‘People think I fully… with my face because of one picture of me as a teenager looking puffy,’ she said.

‘I’m pretty sure you don’t look the same now as you did at 13, right? I have never used filler.

‘Let’s just put an end to that. I have no issue with it, but it’s not for me. Whoever thinks I’ve gotten my eyes lifted or whatever it’s called – it’s face tape! The oldest trick in the book.’

Throughout the interview, Bella also detailed her struggles with body image and mental health, admitting that she always felt ‘ugly’ and ‘uncool’ in comparison to elder sister Gigi.

Bella went on to note that the criticism of her looks made her feel as though she wasn’t worthy of being deemed a supermodel.

She explained: ‘I’ve had this impostor syndrome where people made me feel like I didn’t deserve any of this.

‘People always have something to say, but what I have to say is, I’ve always been misunderstood in my industry and by the people around me.

‘I was the uglier sister. I was the brunette. I wasn’t as cool as Gigi, not as outgoing. That’s really what people said about me. And unfortunately when you get told things so many times, you do just believe it.

‘I always ask myself, how did a girl with incredible insecurities, anxiety, depression, body-image issues, eating issues, who hates to be touched, who has intense social anxiety – what was I doing getting into this business? But over the years I became a good actress.

‘I put on a very smiley face, or a very strong face. I always felt like I had something to prove.

‘People can say anything about how I look, about how I talk, about how I act. But in seven years I never missed a job, canceled a job, was late to a job. No one can ever say that I don’t work my… off.’

She also revealed she previously had to seek professional help for depression – previously checking herself into a treatment facility for two weeks.

She went on to state that the fashion industry can ‘make or break you’ and she has to work hard to ensure she’s not neglecting her mental health.

‘To have to wake up every morning with this brain – it’s not cute,’ she shared. ‘So now everything that I do in my personal life is literally to make sure that my mental state stays above water.

‘Fashion can make you or break you. And if it makes you, you have to make a conscious effort every day for it not to break you. There’s always a bit of grief in love.

‘For three years while I was working, I would wake up every morning hysterical, in tears, alone.

‘I wouldn’t show anybody that. I would go to work, cry at lunch in my little greenroom, finish my day, go to whatever random little hotel I was in for the night, cry again, wake up in the morning, and do the same thing.

‘For so long, I didn’t know what I was crying about. I always felt so lucky, and that would get me even more down on myself. There were people online saying, “You live this amazing life.”

‘So then how can I complain? I always felt that I didn’t have the right to complain, which meant that I didn’t have the right to get help, which was my first problem.’

Bella also said she suffered with mental health issues during her childhood, revealing that she developed anorexia during high school.

Bella had been prescribed extended-release Adderall for her inattention, as doctors believed she had suffered with ADHD, but Bella claimed the appetite-suppressant effect of the medication kickstarted an eating disorder.

She recalled: ‘I was on this calorie-counting app, which was like the devil to me. I’d pack my little lunch with my three raspberries, my celery stick.

‘I was just trying, I realize now, to feel in control of myself when I felt so out of control of everything else.’

While Bella says she now has a healthy relationship with food, she still struggles with dysmorphic feelings, admitting: ‘I can barely look in the mirror to this day because of that period in my life.’
